The Long Watch
The business keeps changing. So does what deserves to be handed forward.

Return Visits
A fieldbook loses its usefulness when the ink stops too soon.
For a small number of companies, Skagway returns from time to time. We notice what changed, add the story that now belongs in the record and mark the old guidance whose season has passed.
- What happened this year that changed how you see the business?
- What nearly went wrong?
- Which old assumption stopped being true?
- Who became unusually important?
- Which relationship now depends too heavily on one person?
- What new story belongs in the Casebook?
- What old guidance should be retired?
The Years Add Margins
The record changes because the company does.

2027
The first record
Consequential decisions, promises, dependencies and open questions are gathered into a useful starting archive.
2031
A changed assumption
A rule that once protected the company no longer fits. The record keeps the history and marks the guidance as retired.
2038
Another person matters
A new relationship or technical dependency has gathered quietly around one person. The route extends before absence exposes it.
2046
The next generation reads it
The archive carries the reasoning behind old decisions while leaving the new leaders responsible for their own decisions.
The Relationship We Hope to Earn
2046
“Skagway first worked with my father before he stepped down.”
A son is talking about the company. The old Casebook is open beside a newer one. Some pages have accumulated annotations; others carry a restrained mark showing that the guidance was retired years ago.
He can see why his father made a difficult decision in 2028. The record does not ask him to repeat it in 2046. It gives him enough history to understand the inheritance—and enough room to be responsible for what happens next.
